Weeknote 9

Thursday 19th January, 2023

After many months of neurosis on the topic, we finally submitted our choices for our daughter's school. Crossing my fingers that we get our first choice as I knew as soon as I walked in that it was the right place for her.

Ironic to simultaneously be doing lots of reading for my MA on neoliberalism and schools. School choice, marketisation, privatisation, competition, etc. As Žižek said, “Ideology is strong exactly because it is no longer experienced as ideology". Instead I mostly experience it as anxiety.

This week I handed in an essay outline which my tutor will give me feedback on before I write the real thing. I am oscillating between thinking it's a work of genius and a naive load of nonsense. Of course, the truth is likely much more mundane. It’s probably somewhere between okay and pretty good.

Going to London one day a week to study and attend lectures and seminars is such a joy. Sitting on a train on my own, looking out the window whilst listening to loud music used to be an everyday occurrence, and it wasn't until I didn't do it for four years (maternity leave + COVID + remote working) that I realised how special it is.
